For several seasons, Andrey Rublev has been settled at the top of the ATP rankings. But the Russian wants more. His ultimate dream: to lift a Grand Slam title, like his friend Daniil Medvedev. This week, the world’s fifth-ranked player is in Doha and will be looking for his first title in 2023. In a press conference, the Russian talked about the progress to be made and one of his inspirations: Novak Djokovic. Rublev obviously appreciated the Serbian’s victory in Melbourne.
“Novak Djokovic proves that basically everything is possible, that at 35 years old he can still be the best player in the world and break all records. If you do the right things, you can reach the highest level, no matter how old you are. In fact, that’s what Novak means to me,” Rublev explained. He then talked about his goals this year. “In my case, it’s not about tennis, it’s more about the emotional part and the things I’m looking for off the court. Because last year I did a lot of things really well off the court, things that helped me a lot, but I was also doing a lot of bad things off the court that were getting me down and things like that. Emotionally, there were also matches that I was able to control better, but I was letting emotions control me completely, I was losing matches because of that. I had a lot of ups and downs last season, so the goal this season is to not have as many ups and downs…and if I do, at least have less.”
