Following his surgery for a hip injury in 2018, Andy Murray had to stay away from the competition for several months to recover. If he went down to the 839th place in the world, the Scotsman managed to achieve his long comeback. Especially, this year 2022 will have marked his return in the Top 100 for the first time since 2018. Currently playing in Basel, the 49th player in the world is already thinking about next season.
At 35, the Scotsman wants to enjoy his time on the ATP Tour as long as he can, but in his mind, it’s clear that tennis will not be his top priority. As a father of four, the former world number one doesn’t want to be away from his family for too long and will set his schedule around them. This is what he explained very clearly in an interview with the Swiss media Watson.
“Our kids are now at an age where they realize I’m gone. I feel bad when I leave for a long time. It breaks my heart.”
“My second oldest daughter and my son both have birthdays this week – and that’s something I don’t want to miss. Because I want to be there for them as much as possible. It’s very hard for me. In the summer, for example, I was in the States for five weeks. That’s too long for me. Our children are now at an age where they realize that I am gone. I feel bad when I’m gone for a long time. It breaks my heart. On the other hand, it’s my job. My wife and family and I have talked about how I want to play next year. Because I don’t want this to happen again. It’s hard to balance that. I’ll do things that aren’t the best for tennis, but my first priority will also be family,” he explained.
