The youngest player in history to finish a year as world No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz could lose his throne at the end of the Australian Open. Having just recovered from a torn oblique muscle suffered in his quarter-final match at the last Rolex Paris Masters, the Spaniard injured his right leg during his preparation for the Australian Open. The 19-year-old was forced to withdraw from the first Grand Slam of the season. This is a major blow as three players are mathematically capable of taking the world number one spot from him: Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud.
For Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas, the deal is simple. With virtually 1660 points behind Alcaraz for the Serb and 1735 for the Greek, the two men have no choice but to win the Australian Open to climb to the top of the world rankings. Casper Ruud, having “only” 1010 points to make up, can do it with a final to take the throne unless Tsitsipas is also there. Indeed, if the Norwegian faces the Greek in the final, he will have to win to become No. 1.
