Matteo Berrettini gave an interview after his last match of the season, a doubles loss along Fabio Fognini against Canada in the Davis Cup semifinals (6-7, 5-7). The Italian, who was 6th in the world at the beginning of the year, has had a nightmare season dealing with injuries and Covid-19. He is now ranked 16th in the world, and wants to start 2023 in a completely different way.
“It’s hard to sum up this 2022 season. After all the diffculty we have, I can’t say it’s a bad season. I had surgery on my hand, and then when I was playing better, I caught the Covid, in the most important tournament of the year for me (Wimbledon).”
“I’ve been working hard to stay optimistic. It’s very mentally draining to not be able to play at your best level after having a great season in 2021. I don’t regret playing Canada because that’s what the team thought was best. Obviously, I would have liked to win that match with Fabio (Fognini), but I’m proud of what I did.”
