French tennis has been smiling since the return to the forefront of Caroline Garcia. The Lyonnaise, semi-finalist at the US Open, shone by winning the WTA Finals to conclude 2022. A message has been sent to the WTA circuit. Caro Garcia no longer hides, she wants to win a Grand Slam title and the Australian Open 2023 is checked. It is known, the course is crucial to get a Grand Slam title. The first obstacle will be Tuesday, the Canadian Katherine Sebov, 191st in the world and from the qualifiers. Then, “Caro” will face either Alizé Cornet or Leylah Fernandez. Before starting her Australian Open, Caroline Garcia was able to talk about her ambitions during the media day. Fun fact, Garcia did not want to know her draw. Only her first opponent.
Ambitious and determined, Caroline Garcia remains modest without hiding her goals. “I think it’s still a new season, but I can keep all the positives of what happened last year, all the improvements I put in place; the state of mind, resting on what I have accomplished to know where I can go, what I can achieve. I don’t start the tournament with the same mindset, obviously not with the same goals, but I still have to kick off the tournament with a first round win. The most important thing right now is to prepare for the first match coming up and see what I can do, how I can improve to go as far as possible. One of the goals for this year, or the next two years, is to try to go all the way, to win a Grand Slam. We’ll see if I’m able to do that, but it’s a big challenge I want to take on.”
Serene and mature, Caroline Garcia has found her balance and seems fulfilled on the circuit. “What I like is to let my results speak for me, and what I do on the court is most important,” she recalled. “It’s always nice and a good gesture to have awards, people to appreciate what they saw on the court, to see as a player, as an athlete, as a person. Yeah, it’s always a positive energy to take. I just want to let my tennis speak for me.”
Finally, Caro Garcia returned to her comments in L’Equipe, where she admitted to having problems with food. “I think if I had known it was going to go this far, maybe I wouldn’t have said it. When I saw how it went around the tennis world, I felt a little uncomfortable. I don’t regret saying it. That’s what happened, I’m not ashamed of it. After being uncomfortable with it (smiling). Yes, I think it happens to a lot of athletes and a lot of ordinary people, because we are still human and we go through a lot of emotions. We have to travel a lot. Even when you have a job or a normal life, it happens to you. It’s the same for us athletes. It’s important if you want to talk about it. Obviously, a lot of people talk about what happens to them, are uncomfortable, are sad. Yes, that’s what you have to do.”
