David Ferrer is the new captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team, the Spanish tennis federation announced Thursday. He succeeds Sergi Bruguera, who left his post on Monday in agreement with his governing body. He will officially begin his three-year term on December 19. As a player, he had won three times the event.
This is a new challenge for him. David Ferrer, former world No. 3, was appointed to become captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team to replace Sergi Bruguera, announced Thursday the Spanish Tennis Federation. The 40-year-old is appointed for three years and will officially take up his duties on December 19 at a ceremony at the headquarters of the Supreme Council of Sports in Madrid.
As a player, Ferrer has won three Davis Cups with Spain (2008, 2009, 2011). In 2013, he won his greatest singles title, the Masters 1000 in Paris, a few months after playing his only Grand Slam final, lost to Rafael Nadal at the French Open.
He retired as a player in May 2019 and succeeds the captaincy of the Spanish team to Bruguera, whose departure was announced on December 12. The latter had won the first edition of the new Davis Cup format in 2019, but he could not count on either Rafael Nadal or Carlos Alcaraz in the finals in Malaga this year. Note that Ferrer is also the director of the event for some months. Nothing has been announced, but it would be surprising if he were to combine the two positions, the conflict of interest would be an obvious pitfall.
