In a podcast with the ATP, Frances Tiafoe talked about different topics, ranging from his performance in 2022 to the retirement of Roger Federer. Although he hasn’t won a single title despite two finals in Estoril and Tokyo, the American has had the best season of his career.
Ranked 38th in the world at the beginning of January, Tiafoe reached his highest ranking in October, 17th, thanks to his magnificent adventure at the US Open. For almost a fortnight, the local player had his fans on fire with victories over Rafael Nadal in the last 16 and Andrey Rublev in the quarters. Finally stopped by the future winner Carlos Alcaraz, this journey in Flushing has changed his life a little.
“Yes, my life has changed a lot. During that time, there were a lot of people who didn’t really like tennis who became tennis fans, it was really cool. I was hanging out with people I never thought I’d hang out with, going to events, and sitting next to people I never thought I’d be around. They were actually excited to meet me. But it was weird. Fortunately, my parents and everyone around me told me not to get sidetracked, because none of this would happen if I didn’t keep winning tennis matches. It was hard because I really thought I was going to make it, but I think it’s the best thing for me that I didn’t win it, honestly, because seeing how everyone reacted and all the things I was invited to without winning it, it gave me a little extra appetite. So in 2023, that’s the goal, to cross that line and go all the way.”
