Captain of the Australian selection and former world number 1 Lleyton Hewitt has issued new criticism of Nick Kyrgios for his late withdrawal from the United Cup, due in particular to a lack of internal communication. The Wimbledon 2022 finalist, however, claimed to have informed the Australian medical staff and the head of the federation of his ankle injury 24 hours before the start of the United Cup. But Hewitt maintains he had no direct contact with his player.
“I wish he would have responded, that’s the normal way to do things,” Hewitt said in a press conference Thursday, the first day of the new ATP and WTA mixed event. “I’ve reached out to him, yes,” the Davis Cup finalist leader said. Nick Kyrgios had already not played the Davis Cup last November, citing the lack of respect he feels in his country, Australia.
