At the end of April, he won his first ATP tournament in Munich, propelling him into the Top 50. Regularly, he gradually climbed to around 30th place in the world. At the end of September, an exceptional sequence of events began. A finalist in Sofia, a title winner in Stockholm, a finalist in Basel and finally a champion at the Rolex Paris Masters with a victory over Novak Djokovic in the final, all in just one month and a handful of days and with the added bonus of a Top 10 ranking. After finishing 2022 ranked 11th in the world, Rune spoke to Relevant Tennis.
Ambitious, Rune is aiming high in 2023 with the throne and a first Grand Slam title in his sights. But during this interview, the Dane also spoke a lot about Novak Djokovic. “Winning in Paris against him was incredible. It was a dream final against an opponent for whom I have a lot of respect. Novak has always been very generous to pass on his knowledge to me, he is a great inspiration. I was very happy to see him win the Masters in Turin and equal Roger Federer. I had many idols when I was a kid. Now that I am a professional player, I am focused on becoming the best version of myself and being able to go as far as I can in this sport. But there are still a lot of players that inspire me, like Djokovic for his physicality, his serve and the precision of his shots.”
