After his hallucinating end of season, Holger Rune took a few days of vacation in Dubai at the beginning of the month. He quickly resumed training alongside his new coach Patrick Mouratoglou before starting a small preseason tour in France. After Bourg-de-Péage, the Dane went to Normandy for the Caen Open. Rune had a great start against Richard Gasquet with a 7-6(5), 6-1 win before taking the title against Roberto Bautista Agut. After his semifinal match, the world’s 11th ranked player spoke to Tennis Actu about his performance and his goals for the 2023 season.
“I feel good, it was a complicated match in which I played better and better. The first set was very close. Gasquet played very well. He was very aggressive, he didn’t stop attacking. He played very well in the tie-break, it was just a few little details but I’m happy to have won that set, it made my job easier. I continued in the second set so I’m really happy with my level of play. I only had one day to acclimate to the conditions before today, and it was a first for me in Caen.”
“It’s true that for an exhibition there are a lot of people. It’s understandable because there are very good players and good games to see, it’s very nice to have so many people to support us. Besides, I really like playing in France, I feel almost like at home. And when you feel at home, you play well so I am very happy.” He then briefly touched on his goals for 2023: “The next step is a Grand Slam and that is my goal.”
