Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios are set to face off in Sydney after committing to start the Australian summer of tennis as the headliners of the first ever United Cup. Prior to the Australian Open in 2023, this inter-country competition will take place across Australia in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney. The top six countries in the WTA rankings, the top five countries in the ATP rankings and the top five combined countries (a total of 16 teams) will compete.
Australia will see Kyrgios and Ajla Tomjanovic join Alex de Minaur, Jason Kubler, Zoe Hives, Maddison Inglis and doubles stars John Peers and Samantha Stosur to complete the eight-player Australian roster for the mixed team event from December 29 to January 8.
While there has been much speculation about Nadal’s future, the 23-time champion appears to have put that speculation to rest by being announced as part of the Spanish team alongside world No. 13 Paula Badosa.
Australia and Spain have been placed in Group D, which will likely see Kyrgios and Nadal face off in an epic match!
The tennis world has hailed the star power that will make it to next year’s inaugural event. Many have also reacted with enthusiasm to the idea of Nadal making another run in Australia, at least one more time.
