The expected fight in Aix-en-Provence between two veterans of the circuit, Andy Murray and Gaël Monfils, did not really keep its promises. The Frenchman, struggling, did not keep pace with the former world number 1 and lost after 1h22 of play (6-3, 6-2).
“Yes, I was surprised to play against Gaël in the first round. He is coming back from injury, a bit like me a few months ago and it is very complicated at our age to resume after an injury like his. He is a very good friend on the circuit, we had already played about 25 years ago and I’m happy to have played against him again now, I hope he will be fine in the next few weeks.
“Personally, I don’t feel as good as I would like, my recovery isn’t going as well as I hope. The level of the circuit is getting higher and higher and it’s complicated to follow (smile) but I am happy to be here, to play in a traditional club and to prepare for Roland-Garros. And tonight, I will allow myself a small glass of wine, I have the right I think of my age (smile) !”
