Andy Murray has not been seen at the French Open since his severe defeat by Stan Wawrinka in 2020. Last year, he did not play the clay court season, even if he finally accepted a wild-card in Madrid. He didn’t think he was physically fit enough and didn’t want to jeopardize his chances for the grass court season. It was a gamble that didn’t necessarily pay off, because although he made it to the final in Stuttgart, he was eliminated in the second round at Wimbledon.
After his victory against Lorenzo Sonego, not without having saved three match points, the Scot admitted that he was (finally) feeling much better physically, to the point of considering participating in the clay court tour, as he explained to the journalists present: “My plan at the moment is to play in Rome and Madrid and I hope for Roland Garros, as long as my body is good. You know, I will do a training block after Miami on clay. I’m going to do it somewhere in Europe … If it goes well, I will play in Rome, Madrid and, as I say, I hope Roland Garros, because the last one I don’t know how many times I played there in the last five or six years, but when I did it, physically it was not good, for example, the year I played Wawrinka, and I don’t remember many other times I played there in the last five or six years. So I would like to have the opportunity to play there one more time before I retire. I would love to play there again.”
