Novak Djokovic is once again at the top of the men’s Grand Slam win list, with 22 major titles, tied with Rafael Nadal, thanks to his success at the Australian Open earlier this year.
But with one year less than his Spanish opponent, he seems to be in a better position to beat and keep the absolute record. In an interview with The National, the Serbian understands the mentality that made Los Angeles Lakers basketball player LeBron James say, “I feel like I’m the best basketball player that’s ever played the game. It’s just my confidence, it’s just what I bring to the table.”
Djokovic pointed to the number of athletes in their 30s and 40s and still at the top of their game in all sports, from Tom Brady to Serena Williams to Roger Federer, and confirmed, “Yeah, I can relate to that because I think what worked for me and still works for me is the self-confidence and the level of confidence, of course always balanced with respect for the opponent, for the game, for appreciating the moment and what you’re going through.”
“But I know that when I’m ready, when I’m on the field, on any surface, against anyone, I’m better, I’m the best. And I don’t think there’s anything arrogant or pretentious about that. I don’t see anything wrong with that.”
