After Nick Kyrgios, Sebastian Korda and Marin Cilic, the list of absentees for the Indian Wells tournament is getting longer. Rafael Nadal, unfortunate finalist in 2022 against Taylor Fritz, will not be coming to California. The Spaniard, ranked 8th in the world, has just resumed training at his home in Manacor on clay after suffering a psoas injury in his second round loss to American Mackenzie McDonald. His intentions are clear: he will take his time and could reappear at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 in mid-April.
“We wish Rafa continued healing and hope to see him back at the BNP Paribas Open next year,” said tournament director Tommy Haas. The Majorcan will therefore lose the 600 points from his final and on 20 March he may no longer be in the Top 10. This would be an earthquake in tennis history as Rafa has not left this circle since April 25, 2005. The Spaniard confirmed on Twitter by posting a video of his physical training: “I’m sad I won’t be able to compete in Indian Wells and Miami. I’m very sad I won’t be there. I will miss all my American fans but I hope to see them later this year during the summer swing.”
