Jannik Sinner has experienced numerous close losses in the last rounds of Grand Slams. Despite the heartbreak of losing in five-set matches to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open, and Stefanos Tsitsipas more recently at the Australian Open, Sinner is taking the positives out of these matches. In an interview with Interview Magazine, he actually explained that it was a sign that he was not far from being part of the best ATP players in the world.
“For sure it’s heartbreaking knowing that you were up with the score or could have made some better decisions […] But it shows me the level is there and I’m not far away. I feel I’m getting closer every time. I have to be patient, which is the toughest thing to deal with”
Although Sinner has not played since Barcelona because of an injury, he looks forward for the Masters 1000 of Rome where he will come back to challenge one more time the best players in the world. He views these opportunities as chances to perform at his best and in case of losses, learn from those matches to better perform next time.
“When you play against the best in the world, you have the pressure to perform and play your best tennis just to be on their level. That’s a big challenge. But right now I’m ready for that – I know my speed of shots, and I know I’m in shape to play for hours. And I love the challenge. You practice for those kinds of matches. I look forward to them. If they don’t go my way, at least I learned something I can use next time”.
